Low Cost 240V, 1PH, Single Phase
Single Phase units utilize the same type starter as three phase starters. There is, however, a difference in the wiring techique. For 240V 1ph units, our enclosed starters will be wired in a manner so that one of the two phases passes through the starter two times. This is necessary because the differential type overloads used with the starters require current going through all three connections. Failing to wire in this method will result in a overload trip. This is by design to help protech motors from "loss of leg" situations. Additionally and very important, a 3 phase unit, for example, of 5HP 230V 3ph is not rated for 5HP 240V 1ph. Roughly, a 1 phase motor starter is roughly half the rating if used on 3 phase. Example: 5HP 1 phase 240V enclosed starter set up is the same as a 10HP 3 phase 230V enclosed starter with a little different wiring.
