HOA type controls provide for both manual and automatic operation. Standard set up for auto is RUN when remote switch closes while in Auto mode.
Example of HOA application: A Fan motor that needs to run when the temperature is above a certain point. If you wanted a Fan to automatically run at 70 degrees or higher you would use a thermostat that has a set of contacts that are open below 70 and closed above 70. There will be two wires stubbed from our control panel that are extended and ran to the thermostat contacts. If the control panel's HOA switch is in the Auto position and the thermostat is above 70 degrees, the fan motor will run and remain running until the temperature reaches below 70 degrees and the thermostat contacts open. The fan would continue to run and stop based on the temperature above or below 70 until the HOA switch is moved to Off. Numerous similar applications apply. The H position is known as Hand. In Hand position the Fan would run continuously regardless of the temperature switch.
Note: These type of controls are NOT suitable for motors that would result in a dangerous situation from reactivating if mains power returned after a power outage. Example would be a table saw or machine where the user could be hurt by moving parts.
